CLEANUP - NIGHTLY EVENTS [Restock / Restore / Update - Userfile/Dungeon]
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
As modules are played for considerable periods of time, the module
becomes used. DOORS are left open, OBJECTS are left lying around,
rooms could be full of monsters and more. For new players, it cannot
be too much fun to find a secret area - only to discover that it has
been looted - with all it's treasure gone. What fun could that be?
CLEANUP.EXE keeps the dungeon clean. It serves many functions:
1. Updates the GRUNT Newspaper.
2. Updates the USERFILE by restoring all dead to life and updating
all USERFILE statistics. It also removes any players that have not
played in 7 days.
3. Extracts the Dungeon Module from the "TARGET.DNG" file. The TARGET
file contains all of the dungeon information.

To use CLEANUP.EXE effectively, choose one of the following.
1. Running GRUNT LOCALLY:
(a) Simply run CLEANUP.EXE from the GRUNT directory.
2. Network Wide - LOCALLY
(a) Simply run CLEANUP.EXE from the GRUNT directory.
3. BBS_DOORS: For Pcboard and all other BBS Software Packages:
(a) You will want to place CLEANUP.EXE in your nightly event batch
file. For PCBOARD sysops, this is generally called "EVENT". For
other BBS software packages, you will have to read your
documentation as to nightly events.
(b) Have CLEANUP.EXE run at least once per day or by desired number
of days.
<RESET>
Here is an example of how to use CLEANUP for playing GRUNT in "Local
Mode" [includes all forms, even if playing on a network or a single-node
machine]:
REM - BATCH FILE BEGIN: [Assuming GRUNT is in C:\GRUNT]
C:
CD C:\GRUNT
CLEANUP.EXE
REM - BATCH FILE END.
<RESET>
Here is a batch file for Sysop's using GRUNT as a BBS_DOOR:
REM - BATCH FILE BEGIN: [Assuming GRUNT is in C:\GRUNT]
C:
CD C:\GRUNT
CLEANUP.EXE
C:
CD C:\PCB\NODE1
BOARD.BAT
REM - BATCH FILE END.
CLEANUP.EXE will read the file "GRUNT.CFG". If this file does not
exist, CLEANUP will terminate. To create this file, run GRUNTCFG.EXE.
NOTE: If you have already installed GRUNT, the installation procedures
will create the "GRUNT.CFG" file. While you may edit this file by
hand with any text editor, you can also edit the configuration
file through GRUNTCFG.EXE (and it is highly recommend that you
do). Also note that any new versions of GRUNT starting at v1.040
will be automatically converted.
<RESET>
CLEANUP creates a file in the set DUNGEON directory (as defined in the
"GRUNT.CFG" file) called "SHUTDOWN.NOW". Any node running GRUNT will
automatically shut down and exit to DOS. This does not affect Novell,
Lantastic, Windows, or other Networks you may be running, it simply
instructs GRUNT to stop running, save all information, and exit out to
DOS. If you are playing on a Network such as Novell or Lantastic, you
will be returned to DOS. If you have GRUNT configured on a BBS system,
it will return to DOS, and continue the execution of your batch file,
hence returning your user to your BBS Software.
** NOTE: Please see the Questions & Answers section to review troubles
associated with CLEANUP.EXE.
<RESET>
While CLEANUP is necessary for the proper functioning of the game and
dungeon, it is not required to be executed daily. If you desire the
dungeon only to be cleaned periodically, you may set the dungeon to clean
as often as you like. It is highly recommended that you cleanse the
dungeon every five days minimum. Players are cleaned internally to GRUNT
if not structured by CLEANUP.
